Boney FIELDS, the missing link between James Cotton, Lucky Peterson and Trombone Shorty
« Bump City » : With more « rock » shades to it, the new repertoire of Chicago’s virtuoso reflects the electric atmosphere of the present days.
« Bump City » is of course the fruit of know how acquired with consistancy and determination, but it is first and foremost an invigorating album driven by the creative freshness of a solid, enthusiastic and very gifted new band, The BFB. It’s a message, a testimony, and the story of a lifetime; that of an honest and generous musician, one who is proud of his young partners to whom he gives great room for expressing themselves.
So it's not surprising at all to detect a savagely brassy New Orleans echo in this celebration of Swing. Isn’t it a nod at the one who lit young Boney Fields’ flame in the early seventies? Someone named Louis Armstrong ?
It seemed therefore natural that Boney Fields chose to pay high tributes to his travelling companion as well as mentor, the late James Cotton, on « Ying Yang », a track enhanced by the grace of a distinguished guest, singer and harmonica player, Charles Pasi.
Bringing joy to his peers is his motto. In « Bump City », the tittle track of the album, Boney Fields incidentally imagines a city where people would "party and dance" all night long. What a beautiful pledge! And as « Ain’t Giving Up On You » and « More » suggest, hope and bliss are the best remedies to the ambushes and setbacks of existence. May he be heard!
